The Thunderbird Lodge estate is one of the best examples of a historic
"Tahoe society" estate and a 6-acre historic district listed in the
National Register of Historic Places, which is surrounded by over 40,000
acres of Forest Service and Nevada State Parks land.

Vikingsholm
Located at the head of Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe on Hwy 89.

This magnificent "castle" is a unique blend of Nature's spectacular
beauty and man's architectural ingenuity. Situated majestically among
towering pines and cedars, it was built as a summer home by Mrs. Lora
Josephine Knight in 1929. Tours are available 7 days a week from
mid-June until the end of September from 10am to 4pm. All tours are
guided and take approximately one-half hour. The tour fee is $1.00 for
adults and free for children under 12. Limited parking is available in
the Vikingsholm parking lot off of Highway 89. There is no public boat
service to Vikingsholm, but Vikingsholm can be reached by private boat.
A dock is provided for loading and unloading only. Beaching a boat is
allowed in the bay from dawn to dusk. Tour boats are available from
South Shore and North Shore. These boats allow passengers to view
Vikingsholm from the water, but they do not dock in Emerald Bay.
Ehrman Mansion

Built at the turn of the century, this Queen Anne Victorian in Sugar
Pine Point State Park represents the opulent post-mining period when
wealthy businessmen built elegant summer homes at Lake Tahoe. This grand
but informal summer home, called Pine Lodge, was completed in 1903 and
was considered to be one of the finest in the high Sierra. Today the
house is maintained as a museum and an example of the opulent tradition
in Tahoe summer homes. Tours are 11am-4pm daily from July through Labor
Day and cost $1. Call for parking information.
Tallac Historic Site

Far from the crowds and gambling, the Tallac Historic Site is home to
the archeological remains of the Tallac Resort and 3 large summer
estates built by wealthy San Franciscans in the late 1800's and the
early 1900's. The Pope, Baldwin, and Valhalla Estates are open to the
public in different capacities. The Pope Estate, built in 1894, is open
for guided tours and houses changing art exhibits. Valhalla is a Grand
Hall with beautiful wood floors, an open wood beam ceiling, a balcony of
lodge pole construction and a 20 foot high stone fireplace! It was built
in 1923 and is now the site of the Tuesday and Thursday concerts, the
Cultural Arts Gift Store and is available for rental. These rustic
estates are nestled in the secluded woods and along the beaches of the
Tallac Historic Site. Call for tour information.

Home to the Kit Carson Trail a 1.5 mile walk through our historic
district with stops at over 30 Victorian homes, churches, museums and
other buildings of historical interest. The Nevada State Railroad Museum
displays a collection of restored historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad
equipment. Rides on the railroad are offered on various weekends in the
summer.
